Chapter Two

Blood. God, there was just too much blood. Visions of guns and snow flashed before Sonny's eyes and he blinked rapidly, desperate to make the flashes disappear.

He looked down at her abdomen and noticed the red flowing liquid. He quickly shrugged out of his jacket and bunched it at her middle. He held it firm, but gently. He did not want to hurt her further. Making sure the jacket was in place; he reached for his cell phone and dialed 911.

"I need an ambulance at the Harbour view Towers, penthouse number two, right away. Alexis-she's been stabbed."

He dropped the receiver and quickly made his way back to Alexis.

"Alexis, honey, open your eyes for me. C'mon, wake up and tell me to stop worrying about you, please," he begged her. He grabbed her hand and squeezed gently.

"Don't you dare leave me. I can't lose you. I WON'T lose you." He shakily brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles.

Sonny re-gathered his jacket and lifted it slightly to see if the bleeding had stopped. It had, but he didn't know if he should take that as a good or bad sign. Time seemed to stand still until the paramedics finally arrived.

They quickly knelt down in front of Alexis and checked her stats.

"BP is falling, massive head trauma, deep abrasion to the abdomen. Blood transfusion needed pending on when we get her to the hospital."

"Let's get her up."

They carefully placed Alexis on the stretcher and headed into the elevator. Sonny was right on their heels.

"She's going to be okay, right?" He asked, almost dreading the answer.

"Too early to determine that right now, sir. We need to get her to GH right now."

"I'm going with you." Sonny stated, moving quickly into the elevator. He clasped Alexis' hand and into her ear. "I'm here Alexis, just hang on."

The paramedics didn't argue with the man, but instead loaded Alexis into the back of the ambulance, Sonny right by her side.

Sonny paced around the waiting room, eagerly awaiting any news on Alexis' condition. She had been in surgery for over eight hours now and the doctors had told him nothing. Sonny felt as if he was about to go insane when the doctor, finally, emerged.

Sonny's heart sank. Her scrubs her covered in blood and she did not look happy.

"How is she doctor?"

"Right now it's touch and go. There is slight swelling in the brain and her stomach wound was quite deep. I don't think at this particular moment there is any permanent damage, but he will do further testing and evaluation to determine that. But right now, nothing is too serious and I'd say she is quite lucky to be alive."

Sonny had so many thoughts running through his head and he didn't know where to begin. Instead he asked if he could see her.

"She's in ICU right now for observation, but I can take you to see her. But only for a little while."

"Thank you," Sonny whispered.

Sonny was led to her room and the doctor gave him a sympathetic smile and left. Sonny felt as though he had been punched in the gut when he saw Alexis, small and pale lying in the bed. Her colour was almost matching that of the crisp white sheets covering her lithe frame.

He watched her laboured breathing and listened to the monotone beeping of the heart monitor. To him it was a comfort; it told him she was alive. He wished she would wake up, flash him her own dimpled grin and tell him that she was fine and not to worry. Instead, he pulled over a chair and placed himself in it. He sat at her side and his hand unconsciously found its way into hers.

He took her hand and brought it to his cheek, savouring the way the smooth skin felt on his own. He closed his eyes and let out a ragged breath. He opened his eyes and felt a tear slip down his cheek. He placed her hand over it and then brought it to his lips.

"God, I'm so sorry, Alexis."

He placed his head in her lap, careful to not disturb her wounds. He shut his eyes and let himself listen to the soft even breathing that he knew was only hers. He matched his rhythm to hers and was soon lulled into sleep, content to know that she was there in his arms.
