Part Six

Both men walked towards the bench and sat down.

Sonny let out a sigh. "How did this all happen Jason? I mean, the last time you were here, Carly and I had our problems but I was sure that we would work things out and be together forever. Alexis, well, she's always been there, she's a great friend and she understood me."

"I don't know Sonny. I mean, I was gone for a long time. I don't know what went on or what you two have been through together. But it doesn't take a genius to figure out how you both feel."

"So, you think she feels the same way?"

Jason let out a giggle at his friend's ignorance, "I can't believe you really don't see what you do to her. I mean, you made her cry Sonny. I'm not saying it was a good thing, but damn, you made Alexis Davis cry. That must mean something right. You must mean something to her if she would cry over you."

"That's the last thing in the world I want to do. I never want to be the one to put a tear on that woman's face," Alexis' face appeared again in his mind. "You know, it was comforting to have her around when you were gone. I guess I liked to believe that I depended on her because she replaced a part of you in my life. But that wasn't it. We connected in a way that I never have before with anyone, not even Carly," Sonny rested his elbows on his knees and looked at the lake, "She makes me want to be a better man."

With that, Jason lifted himself off the bench and turned to Sonny, "Well, what the hell are you sitting here with me telling me all this for. Go tell her yourself."

"I can't. It's complicated," Sonny retorted back. "I hurt her Jason, when I chose Carly over her. Now she's back together with Ned and..."

Jason interrupted him, "How do you know for sure. Yeah, when you saw them at the cottage, when you told me... but you also told me that Ned and Kristina are together... and after seeing her today, I doubt what you saw was accurate. I don't think Alexis would purposely do anything to hurt her sister. I know Ned and Alexis had a pretty intense history, and that she was the love of Ned's life, but I think he has moved on with Kristina... What you saw was probably just two friends who were comforting each other. I mean, did she tell you herself that she was back together with Ned?"

"Not in so many words."

"Then..."

"But when I asked her, she dodged the question and snapped at me, like she was trying to hide something."

"Well, I gotta give it to you Sonny. You always have that affect on women."

Sonny couldn't help but let out a chuckle, "It's funny when she gets all defensive and all, you know... Especially when she gets her way and think she's won, her face lights up and she wears this smirk on her face..... But you know, it'll never work out. She has these commitment issues and she won't just jump and marry me like Carly. She's complicated that way. And, you know, our business and well, her principles... she doesn't approve of what we do."

"She still represented you and stuck by you all the way knowing what you did. She represented you legally but knew you were involved in a dangerous life, but she still stuck by you. That means something. I mean, just take it slow and see where it goes."

"I don't want to endanger her life Jason. She's suffered enough growing up as a Cassadine. This business of ours, we can't keep people too close. Especially with the mob war going on. I already lost two women in my life and two unborn children, I don't want to lose her too. I mean, look what happened to Elizabeth. How is she by the way?"

"She's good. I was actually on my way to the hospital to see her. The doctor's kept her overnight last night and I think they'll release her today."

"That's good, I'm glad things are working out for you."

The two of them sat in silence and looked at the horizon while the memories of the two women they loved lingered in their mind, invading their thoughts and their hearts.

"What happens to Carly?" Jason asked flatly.

Sonny let out a sigh, "Right, you know we were suppose to re-new our vows today."

"Past tense...so you're not going to go through with it?"

"I love her and Michael, I guess part of me always will. Carly and I have been through some pretty tough stuff. But you know, it's the same story every time we're together. I know now that she's trying, but I've given up... It's different this time around, you know."

Jason felt guilty. He withheld the truth from Sonny about what really happened with Carly, he debated whether to tell him now, or just leave it be. 'Would it even make a difference?' he asked himself. He was caught in the middle, he either betrayed Carly's trust or Sonny's.

Sonny interrupted his thoughts, "You know, she faked her accident..."

Sonny's confession of the truth shocked Jason, "How did you find out?" His words sounded stupid, even to him. Of course Sonny found out, Sonny knew everything. Jason was just surprised that he kept it and played along all this time when he could've busted her already.

"I checked up on her...You know what, it doesn't matter what she did, I don't think she'll ever change. She tries but she just messes it up. I guess that's why I always feel like I have to take care of her and bail her out... If not for her, for Michael's sake. I still can't believe that she lied about the whole thing and made her own mother and child worry sick about her..."

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked you to take care of her when I was gone..."

"I did it for Michael, Jason... No child should ever feel neglected or be fatherless... it's not their fault you know..."

Jason looked at his watch and saw that it was ten past twelve. "Uh, I better to go to the hospital now. They're releasing Elizabeth at one." Jason lifted himself off the bench. Sonny followed him.

"Sonny, go after her. It's not too late. Tell her how you feel, even if she tries to push you away or shut down. You know if Stone was here right now, he wouldn't want you to pass up on this opportunity... things like this don't come to guys like us to often, we gotta go for it when it comes... Alexis won't be waiting for you forever." Jason walked away as Sonny took in his words.

People has a misconception that the accident has left Jason brainless, a med.-student turned enforcer. But their conversation on the docks simplified things for Sonny. He now knew what he wants, now all he has to do is follow Jason's advice and go after her. "Jason..." he called out.

Jason turned around and looked at Sonny. "Yeah..."

"I'm glad your back."

With that, the two men nodded their heads and went their separate ways to the women their mind, body and heart longed to see.
